Liquid media has better nutrient diffusion and uptake rates than semisolid media. In semisolid media, nutrients are depleted in the local root zone but remain untouched in distance areas.
In an experiment with Banana, Root Stands with a rocker developed twice as fast! With the Root Stands in static liquid there was a slight speed advantage, there was more uniform rooting than in semisolid (100% of explants rooted), and we didn’t have to wash gel of the roots!

Have you ever spent hours carefully washing gel from roots when preparing for planting in soil? With the Root Stand, liquid media is simply rinsed off in water, and the explants are ready for soil!
The Root Stand holds shoots upright in the liquid, and prevents aerial tissues from being submerged. This stops roots from developing in strange places, and reduces hyperhydricity.
Great care must be taken not to damage while washing off semisolid media, however, no matter how gentle you are, microscopic root hairs are inevitably damaged. With the Root Stand’s no-touch procedure, roots are pristine, intact and ready for soil.
The two pieces are placed into the We-V box and held up by the walls of the vessel. The top piece is placed upside down to create a grid pattern. Add liquid rooting media and autoclave. When the media has cooled place your explants in the lattice.
When the rooting phase is completed, the two pieces simply slide apart, releasing all your plants. These can be dropped into a bucket of water, and brought directly to your potting station.
Note: Diagram shows a prototype Root Stand, but the function of releasing the plants is identical.
